Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders Et Al Silver Repousse Dip Pen Believed c.1900 Hmkd

Condition: Appears to be in beautiful condition. See Photos.

I don’t know a great deal about this item, other than it is a beautiful hallmarked silver repousse dip pen made by Saunders, Shepherd & Co Ltd in Birmingham dated c.1900 but can’t be sure about the date as my eyes can’t quite read the date letter on the hallmark. I have included a magnified negative high resolution photo above so that you might determine the date for yourself.

The area of the pen under the nib holder is also stamped “M” spaced “C”

About Saunders, Shepherd & Co Ltd…

Cornelius Desormeaux Sanders Sr and James Francis Hollings Shepherd established in 1869 as pair of quite imaginative silversmiths and jewellers, in 1893 they registered their silver mark CS*FS and used this to make high quality heavy grade silver items. They changed their company name to Saunders, Shepherd & Co Ltd in 1916 by which time they had factories at 58-61 Fetter Lane, London, 94 Vyse Street, Birmingham and a branch at 62, Buchanan Street, Glasgow.

After pulling through the depression of the 1930’s the London premises was bombed in 1941 during WW2. By 1945 the company was down to just 30 employees but gradually recovered and in 1980 moved to 1 Bleeding Heart Yard, London (Perhaps it could be said that the yard name was particularly apt after the struggle they had over a considerable number of years between world wars?).

In 1981, after becoming a company of considerable renown, Saunders, Shepherd & Co Ltd arguably gained yet greater prestige to their name after being commissioned to make an 18ct gold bracelet for Lady Diana Spencer who wore it on the day of her wedding to Prince Charles on July 29th of that year. The company remains today as a highly reputable firm and are based at their new factory in Albion Street, Birmingham.
